Sustainable and ESG Investing

April 19, 2026  ·  Wealth Matters Series · 7 min read

Sustainable investing — sometimes called ESG, impact, or values-aligned investing — has moved from a niche preference to a mainstream consideration in private wealth. For many of our clients, the question is no longer whether to consider sustainability but how to do so without sacrificing returns or principles.

Done well, sustainable investing aligns your capital with your values, often improves long-term risk-adjusted returns by avoiding companies with material governance or environmental risks, and provides a powerful narrative to share with the next generation about what your wealth stands for.

Three Distinct Approaches

Exclusionary screening removes specific industries (tobacco, weapons, fossil fuels) from a portfolio. ESG integration uses environmental, social, and governance factors as one input alongside traditional financial analysis. Impact investing actively seeks measurable positive outcomes alongside financial return. Each serves different goals.

The Returns Question

A growing body of research suggests that well-constructed ESG portfolios produce returns broadly in line with conventional portfolios, sometimes with lower volatility. The historical penalty for sustainable investing has narrowed dramatically as the universe of high-quality sustainable funds has grown.

Greenwashing Is Real

Not every fund labelled "sustainable" deserves the label. Look for transparent methodology, third-party verification, meaningful holdings differences from conventional benchmarks, and clear reporting on impact metrics. Marketing language alone is not enough.

Engagement vs Divestment

Some investors prefer to divest entirely from controversial industries; others prefer to remain invested and use shareholder voting and engagement to push for change. Both can be principled positions; the right one depends on what you believe creates change.

Make It Personal

Sustainability is, ultimately, a personal definition. Climate, social justice, governance, animal welfare, and faith-based criteria all qualify. Your private banker can build a portfolio that reflects your specific definition rather than a generic ESG label.
